Olympic games, titanic pricesFlavien Lallemand had barely made it on the Paris 2024 ticketing site, before deciding it wasn’t worth it. The Olympics, last hosted in Tokyo, Japan, is the world's largest sporting event and the French government claims the 2024 Games will be the most inclusive yet. It’s an embarrassing distraction for the games organizers, who have trumpeted the events accessibility credentials. “Paris 2024 will be the first Games to focus on solidarity and inclusivity,” boasts their official site. Unlike past Games, Paris 2024 set up a “games pack” purchase system.

Barbie likely wouldn't exist if Mattel's founder hadn't stumbled across Bild Lilli, a plastic doll based on a comic strip. The first Barbie doll, from 1959, had Lilli's red lips, high blonde ponytail, and winged eyeliner. But these dolls had flat chests, big bellies, and squatty legs – they were built like overweight six- or eight-year-olds," Handler wrote. The newspaper began making Lilli dolls in 1955 because of the comic's popularity and to market the newspaper. "Here were the breasts, the small waist, the long, tapered legs I had enthusiastically described for the designers all those years ago," Handler wrote.

Amazon needs to watch out for Charlie Bell. A founder of Amazon Web Services and the firm's "best person in the room," Bell shook the industry last September when he joined Microsoft. Bell will be overseeing a new cybersecurity division at Microsoft — but insiders at both Amazon and Microsoft wonder if he'll go more directly up against his former employer. My colleague Ashley Stewart examines the growing threat of Microsoft now that Bell is free from his noncompete purgatory. Look into the future here for Bell — and Microsoft — without Amazon's restrictions.
Microsoft 's (MSFT) proposed blockbuster acquisition of video-game publisher Activision Blizzard (ATVI) may be doomed thanks to British regulators. The U.K.'s top antitrust body — the Competition and Markets Authority — said Wednesday that it opposes Microsoft's $69 billion bid because of competition concerns in the budding cloud gaming market. Microsoft's multipart gaming business includes Xbox consoles, cloud-based Xbox Game Pass service and in-house titles, such as the long-running "Halo" series. The CMA's opposition centered on competition concerns in the burgeoning world of cloud gaming, which Jefferies analysts estimate is less than 2% of the overall gaming market. Cloud gaming enables players to, essentially, stream video games without having to buy a physical console.

Elon Musk's $1 million bounty. Twitter CEO Elon Musk has some kind of bounty out for whomever is behind the botnets that he says target certain users and suppresses the reach of their tweets. Million dollar bounty if convicted" in response to a Twitter user who claimed that botnets "silence" certain accounts. Musk and the user were referring to a thread where another user analyzed Twitter's recently open-sourced algorithm. Twitter users called attention to the difficulty in seeing direct messages that mention "gay", "queer", and "trans."
A TikTok sale or US ban could be a boon for Mark Zuckerberg and Meta. Instagram Reels could see a boost from a shift away from TikTok in the US, experts say. Zuckerberg has much to gain from a TikTok ban. It would be like Christmas coming early for Meta, which is looking to boost engagement of its rival service, Instagram Reels. In the short term, apps like Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts could also see a boost.
Alphabet (GOOGL), Meta Platforms (META), Ford Motor (F) and Estee Lauder (EL) are the four Club holdings that maintain a dual-class structure. Dual-class stock structures generally designate shares as part of Class A or Class B, with one carrying more weight than the other. Google Co-founders Sergey Brin and Larry Page took their nascent firm, now Alphabet, public in 2004 with a dual-class stock structure. Advantages A dual-class structure allows founders, C-suite executives or key investors to maintain control and execute their long-term vision for the business. Bottom line Dual-class shares are not ideal, but they're not a deal breaker either.
Aviation emissions in Europe increased an average of 5% year-on-year between 2013 and 2019, according to the EU. Not surprisingly these moves have set alarm bells ringing in the aviation industry. “For many decision-makers, banning short-haul flights and showing support to the rail industry is an easy win to gain favor with the public, especially in Europe,” Montserrat Barriga, the ERA’s director general, told CNN. “Governments continue ignoring the biggest source of aviation emissions – long-haul flights, that remain unpriced and unregulated,” says T&E’s Dardenne. Better connectivity between intercity rail and airports would also reduce the need for short-haul flights.
The growth of Apple's services revenue in recent years has fueled our enduring investment mantra: Own Apple, don't trade it. Apple shares rose 270.5% between Feb. 6, 2018 and Friday's close, far outpacing the S & P 500's roughly 50% advance over that period. Over the 12 months in which Goldman had a sell on Apple shares, the stock climbed about 89% . In particular, we appreciate the analyst's conviction in the company's services growth, which includes the App Store and Apple Music. As that base of active device users expands, the number of people who will pay for additional Apple services grows alongside it.
Elon Musk's revamped Twitter Blue launch has hit some major snags in the past week. The shenanigans surrounding the blue check (and subsequent gray check) has heads spinning among average Twitter users, major advertisers and big-name celebrities. Here's a look at everything that's happened with Twitter Blue in the past week and the murky state of verification on the platform. Musk's new verification model was designed to become part of Twitter's existing Twitter Blue feature, a $4.99 monthly subscription offering premium services. He also said that Twitter is adding a "parody subscript," because "tricking people is not ok."It is unclear when and how Twitter Blue may be reinstated.
Elon Musk has announced that Twitter would introduce an $8 monthly verification fee for users who want to keep their blue tick. Chesnot/Getty ImagesDespite criticism, Musk has doubled down on his plans to charge users who want to remain verified on the platform. The $8 subscription fee is cheaper than what The Verge reported, which was $20 monthly. Users who pay for the subscription will not only get the blue tick, but also the ability to long-form videos, fewer ads, and priority in search, according to Musk.

That might be the best way to sum up the Elon Musk-Twitter saga that has played out over the past six-plus months. It finally appears an end is in sight*, or at least the closing of a transaction. The main issue remains how Musk will come up with the $44 billion needed to actually buy Twitter.
